For the 110th anniversary of the establishment of Tongji University and the 5th anniversary of the establishment of the Sino-Spanish Campus, the Gabarron Foundation in Spain presented a sculpture exhibition titled The Mysteries of Columbus to Tongji University. The exhibition is available from January 18, 2017 to November 20, 2017 at Siping Road campus of Tongji University.
The exhibition consists of nine sculptures. The author of those works is the world-renowned Spanish contemporary artist Cristobal Gabarron. Mr. Gabarron has taken great leaps in his artistic career and has a tremendous impact across the globe. His highlighted works are: the Olympic Mural for the Barcelona Olympic Games (1992), the Encounter Mural for the Universal Exhibition of Seville (1992), the great sculptural project “Atlanta Start” (1996), the materialization of the work “Hope for Peace” (1986) and the Official Poster for the Millennium Summit and the Millennium Chapel.
The Mysteries of Columbus was created by Gabarron in 2006, who was inspired by the famous explorer and navigator, Christopher Columbus. To pay the tribute to human spirit of adventure and the discovery of America, Gabarron created these symbolic pieces. In addition, Mr. Gabarron wants to express his reflection on the role of art in our lives, as well as the coexistence and the development of human values through this works. Such pursuing guided him to the space of public art. During the creation process, he was constantly seeking balances among elements of art and urban space: the balance between the closeness with the viewers and improvement of the environment where their daily lives evolve; the balance between humanity and efficient urban planning; the balance between modern metropolitan centers and the culture anchored within it. The Mysteries of Columbus is the answer to those how-to-balance questions. With its most varied forms and colors, the sculptures added more liveliness and fun to the single style of the city.
