As more households own automobiles, pollutants in car emission including carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides have become a major factor in damaging the air quality of a region. To support the municipal-level traffic management efforts and fully play its role in environment management, the Yangpu Environmental Protection Bureau installed emission testing facilities at No. 150 of East Guoquan Road to conduct remote examinations for passing vehicles on November 7th and 8th, following its previous test on May 12th. With the assistance of Yangpu Traffic Police, the Bureau also conducted random emission tests for some vehicles and demanded a rectification within limited time from those with an excessive emission.
The remote emission test facilities consist of an environmental protection inspection vehicle equipped with a testing system, digital surveillance cameras and emission test machines. When a vehicle passes, the facilities can detect and rapidly upload its emission data, and then the testing system can analyze and display the amount of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in the emission. With a license plate identification technique, the facilities can output information and test results of vehicles in real time.
The Bureau has made it a periodical task to test emission of 6,000 vehicles annually for environmental protection, in the hope to improve air quality through its monitoring and testing.
