Tongji University and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) entered into an agreement under which the two parties would jointly devote efforts and train Masters of Intellectual Property Law on a global recruitment basis, so as to contribute to Shanghai’s master plan of become a global innovation center. This is the first time for WIPO to cooperate with a Chinese university on high-end talents on intellectual properties.
According to the agreement, the program is designed to train high-end specialists with global vision and prowess in their profession who can be trusted with operating tasks at international organizations, transnational corporations and international IPs. The two parties will establish an international steering committee and jointly formulate training plans, as well as faculty and student recruitment. WIPO will offer support on international recruitment, scholarship, books and materials, faculty and internship; while Tongji University is in charge of student admission, course development (in English) and theses instructions. Upon graduation, students will receive a postgraduate diploma by Tongji University and a certificate by WIPO. The recruitment begins next month, with a 30-student quota for the first batch who will officially receive the training in September, 2017.
According to Cheng Deli, Associate Professor from IP Institute of Tongji University who is involved in the program, China has trained a sufficient number of IP talents, but few of them are capable of operating international IPs. Therefore, this program was designed to be different than the conventional methods. For instance, as the courses will be conducted in English, all applicants are required to present their IELTS or TOEFL grades; for faculty members, 1/3 of lectures will be college teachers, 1/3 law practitioner including judges or lawyers, and the other 1/3 will be global IP experts.
WIPO is a special organization on intellectual properties under the UN, who has offered great support for China’s IP development. In recent years, WIPO has increasingly emphasized on China’s role and has opened an office in Beijing. To promote the course of IP globally, WIPO has selected 7 universitiesfrom 7 cities to conduct the postgraduate IP law program, and Tongji is WIPO’s 8th university partner.
