Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administration has named scribbling walls in universities such as Tongji new fashion sights in Shanghai. The news has been released through media channels such as microblog and has aroused hot discussions on the internet. Scribbling, a hip-hop art form born in the west becomes increasingly popular in Shanghai these years. Some universities have spared special places for students and artists to create their scribbling works freely.

　　The scribbling wall in Tongji University is in front of Xiyuan Canteen and behind Xueyuan Canteen on the home campus. With total length over 100 meters and height of two meters, the wall presents about 20 pieces of work which includes simple art words, abstract patterns and complicated canton characters. Some of the works are purely scribbling while some are deliberately designed. The wall fully reflects youth vigor and free spirit of the authors.

　　Fans of the scribbling wall in Tingji include students on the campus and residents living nearby. On holidays, some young people will come here to visit and even make the wall a photo shooting spot. Tongji adopts fairly free management over the scribbling wall and has no strict restrictions over the scribbling on the wall. “The wall is a place for students to fully express themselves. The school won’t interfere with the scribbling,” said related principals of Tongji University.

　　Compared with the one in Tongji, the scribbling walls in Shanghai University of Science and Technology are much longer. Being part of the coastal “No.1 Scenic Belt” on Jungong Lu Campus, the scribbling wall is divided into a few sections with total length about 400-500 meters. From the beginning when the school encouraged students to scribble on the wall till today when scribbling societies on the campus, graduates and even senior artists from society come with spray paints, the wall has been filled with works of different styles. It has become a common practice that before summer vacation every year, the university will paint the entire wall white to welcome scribbling works of freshmen.
