Isn’t it too odd to match philosophy and physics and chemistry? 37 colleges and universities in Shanghai have recently announced their requirements for selective subjects for the 2017 college entrance examination. The arrangement of Fudan University triggered heated discussions as it designated physics, chemistry and history to be selective subjects to test for the specialty of philosophy.

　　According to Sun Xiangchen, Dean of the School of Philosophy of Fudan, philosophy is a subject that pursues rigorous thinking and strict verification. The school shall reinforce its tradition to recruit students of both liberal arts and sciences to balance intelligence and culture because pure humanities don’t foster the all-round development of philosophy. The most active areas of philosophy include “philosophy of sciences”. Hao Zhaokuan, Deputy Dean of the school, pointed out that as the thinking about the most essential theories of the world, philosophy must base on important achievements of natural science while the most fundamental part of natural science must involve philosophical thinking.

　　Philosophy is inseparably connected with subjects such as mathematics, physics and chemistry. At the gate of the school the ancient Greek philosopher Plato founded, there was the plate on which was written “No Entry for People not Knowing Geometry”. Philosophers of modern times including Rene Descartes, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and Blaise Pascal?were all great mathematicians and physicists while contemporary philosophers such as Bertrand Russell, Alfred North Whitehead and Moritz Schlick were at the same time mathematicians, physicists or engineers.

　　According to Ding Guanghong, Assistant to President and Director of the Recruitment Office of Fudan, the selective subjects to test for the specialty of philosophy demonstrates the concept of enrolling students of both liberal arts and sciences. It does not mean students have to take test for all the three selective subjects but need only choose one from physics, chemistry or history to go for the specialty of philosophy. It took Fudan more than two months to discuss and finalize the selective subjects. Related experts and principals of senior high schools were invited to present their opinions as the early phase. Then Fudan organized experts and professors of subjects from the school and university levels to discuss and work out the preliminary plan for selective subjects to test for the specialties in 2017 based on requirements for talents cultivation of individual specialties. The existing plan was finalized after a few rounds of modifications. “The plan has to firstly match the talent cultivation laws and demonstrate the characteristics of Fudan; secondly, the plan has to be based on current education of high schools and promote the deepening of the reform; thirdly, the plan benefits the students’ learning and life-long development,” said Ding Guanghong when elaborating the starting point of such a plan.

　　The School of Philosophy of Fudan has a good number of young teachers with science background, particularly those of logic and philosophy of science. The ratio of students of science is usually higher than that of students of liberal arts in this school. In recent years, many students of sciences including physics have transferred to the specialty of philosophy and are all outperforming. “Teachers of philosophy are deeply impressed by students with science background, no matter they are recruited from high schools or transferred from other departments,” said Sun Xiangchen. Students enrolled in the School of Philosophy will continue to learn advanced mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, psychology and mathematical logic.

　　Certain expert & scholar in Fudan said one important goal for the reform in college entrance examination this time is that each college and university will be able to design basic subject requirements for recruitment based on its own subject development and talent cultivation concept. College entrance examination will be functioning as a “baton” to select the students and as “tractor” at the same time to help the colleges and universities make clear of their subject development plan. In this way, the colleges and universities will be driven to more consciously guide education, teaching and scientific research to develop toward the direction that matches their own positioning.
