To prevent bird flu, live poultry trade has again caused social attention as Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce has recently announced to suspend live poultry trade starting from February 19 in 2015, the first day of the New Year according to Chinese lunar calendar.
There are 130 market places for live poultry trade in Shanghai, covering each district and county. The 27 market places in Jing’an, Yangpu, Huangpu and Minhang have been closed up to date. As required by Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce, live poultry trade is forbidden at both the designated wholesale and retail market places during the suspension period. Live poultry transported from outside Shanghai can only be processed collectively in local abattoirs and cannot go to the market place directly.
Over the suspension period, the industrial and commercial administrative authorities will request designated wholesale or retail market places where live poultry trade is found to rectify their behavior. Market operators and managers will be fined. Urban management administrative enforcement authorities will be responsible for overseeing illegal live poultry trade outside the market, on the streets or mobile stands and have the right to confiscate the tools and live poultry and fine the traders.
