On October 16, Yangpu District Library held a Sino-Russian Poem Recital commemorating the 201st birthday anniversary of MikhailIurievich Lermontov as an event of the “Window of Russia” cultural series. Members of the Birch Society of Fudan University recited five poems written by the great poet in Chinese and Russian, including “War,”“Beggar,”“Black Eyes,”“So Dull! So Sad!” and “Sail”.
Lermontov was another great poet after Pushkin. Love to his country and eulogy to freedom were the fundamental themes of his poetry which reflected his depression and strength. He was excellent in both romantic and realistic expressions. His major works included “The Pirate” and “The Criminal”. Professor Yang Weimin from Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, also a lecturer of the Oriental Classroom, firstly introduced the biology and creation stories of Lermontov, setting the stage for the audience to further understand the creation background of this great poet. The audience also appreciated the songs adapted from the poems of Lermontov, i.e., “Alone I Set out on the Road” and “Lonely Sail on Misty Ocean”.
