At the just concluded Vancouver Marathon, one of the top ten marathons in the world, a Chinese runner in her early 20s, Zheng Zhiling, sent by Yangpu Youth Amateur Athletic School, won the women's marathon in a time of 2:43:50, becoming the first Chinese runner ever won the Vancouver Marathon.
Zheng was the 7th among all the runners crossing the finish line in this year's Vancouver Marathon, with the first 6 runners all being male. When she crossed the line as the first female runner, she was greeted with waves of applause from spectators on both sides of the track.
Zheng entered Yangpu Youth Amateur Athletic School in 2011, and was sent to the Affiliated Competitive Sport School of Shanghai University of Sport in 2013. Now she is a senior at SUS. When she was still in elementary school, she had found her gift of being a runner, "I really enjoyed it when I was running. Crossing the finish line was my happiest moment," She said.
Zheng's talent wasn't really shown until 2015 when she won the third place of women's half marathon at the first Wenzhou Marathon. The following year she entered the competition again and won the women's marathon, which was quite an achievement because that was the first winner in Wenzhou Marathon who was not a black.
Wenzhou Marathon made her name, and then she kept going and ran in a series of competitions at home and abroad. Though this was not Zheng's first competition abroad, it was her first win. "One of the reasons of my good performance is that I was not just running for myself, but also for my country, for that I had to give it my best shot," Zheng said.
Li Guoqiang, Zheng's trainer, said that Zheng would focus on Marathon in her following training and strive for the highest standards, "as soon as the field competition has ended in June, we will go to Yunnan for high altitude training."
