Undergraduates from the Mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan take the same course in the same classroom. They learn from one another and exchange ideas. Their credits for the course will be recognized by all the involved universities. Tongji University, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Taiwan Feng Chia University and Taiwan Shih Hsin University have recently joined efforts launching the ten-day 2014 United University (Summer Vacation Shanghai) in Tongji. The four universities have synchronized launching four open selective courses related to sustainable development of the mankind. 411 students from these four universities attended the classes, including 58 students from Tongji, 74 from The Hong Kong Polytenic University, 150 from Feng Chia and 129 from Shih Hsin. Eight students from the University of Macau were also invited to take the courses of the United University.
According to Pan Huibin, Director of the Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan Affairs Office in Tongji, the four universities have carried out fruitful cooperation in teaching and scientific research for a long time. The launching of the United University in this summer vacation was to further promote substantial cooperation among universities in the mainland and Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau, particularly communication and cooperation among teachers and students. The University of Macau is to take part in the cooperation in the future. The first term of the United University, with “Excellence & Innovation” as the theme, has fully tapped quality teaching resources of the four universities, setting up a communication platform for the students and facilitating the cultivation of excellent talents with leadership, innovation thinking and communication capability.
The four selective courses offered by the four universities are all characteristic advantageous subjects of respective university, including “Building Environment and City Culture” from Tongji, “Human-oriented Design” from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, “Blue Planet Green Life—a Shallow Touch on Modern Trend of Architecture, Engineering and Management” from Feng Chia and “Communication Skills” from Shih Hsin. Each of the courses is delivered by famous professors from respective universities for students to enroll on voluntary basis. Each course has 42 class hours and offers three credits. Students will be rated after the course is over and the credits will be recognized by all the four universities.
As learned, when conditions become mature, the four universities will likely discuss about founding a tangible university.
