    It was the first choice of many people to hang out with friends in a restaurant or a bar to watch the football games during the “World Cup”. Drinking was very likely on such occasions. However, some people would drive by themselves after drinking, which created extreme threat to the safety of their own and others. To eradicate the potential risks of driving under influence (DUI), Yangpu traffic police enhanced interception of such cases during the “World Cup” and caught 92 cases, including ten drunk driving cases. Involved drivers have been detained.
    In the small hours of July 14 after the final game of the “World Cup”, a 42-year-old man surnamed Wang was transferred from the traffic police to the public security bureau after he was found drunk driving. Wang said he and a few friends of his had dinner at a restaurant called “Yu Jing Xuan” nearby Hongfeng Lu in Pudong on the night of July 13. They had a great deal of strong alcohol including Whisky. Wang was too tired for watching the football game overnight so that he fell asleep in his car. He felt much better when he woke up and decided to push his luck thinking no traffic police would be working in such early hours of the day. When he drove to Kongjiang Lu close to Dahushan Lu, he was stopped by the traffic police and took a break alcohol test. The BAC result was 95mg/100ml to prove that Wang was drunk driving.
    The traffic police on duty brought Wang to Kongjiang Hospital for blood test afterwards. The BAC result was 73mg/100ml to prove that he was DUI but not to the intoxicated standard. Wang’s driving license was detained for six months and Wang himself was fined RMB1, 000. Up to date, all the 92 intercepted DUI parties have been punished accordingly. The traffic police again alert the drivers, though the “World Cup” football games were over, should not drink before driving or not drive after drinking on various parties or other occasions when alcohol was involved. All drivers should strictly abide by traffic laws and rules and take responsibilities for the life and property of their own and others.
