Spraying devices to prevent dust has been recently installed on the walls on the two sides of the 400-meter-long Haian Lu, at 1.5 meters’ interval. Watched from afar, the road looks like it is shrouded in gossamer. Passengers on the road can obviously feel the fresh and cool air.

　　Many spraying devices were installed in the World Expo Park to cool visitors. In fact, such devices can also prevent dust. According to Chen Liguo from Shanghai Zaitian Environmental Technology Co., Ltd., “Water coming out of the high-pressure nozzle will turn into flying mist of very fine grains which can quickly absorb dust grains of different sizes in the air. In this way, the spraying creates very fresh air, reduce the dust and increase humidity at the same time. The device is not expensive and easy to maintain. It is economic and practical. It is very convenient as the system can be automatically controlled.”

　　Haian Lu is only 400 meters long, connecting Jungong Lu and Fuxing Island. As there are many cement factories on Fuxing Island, most of the vehicles on the road are heavy-duty trucks, which causes a lot of complaints from residents nearby because of the heavy dust on the road. Yangpu District Environmental Protection Bureau has taken the lead installing such spraying devices along the road as a pilot program with the intention to control the dust in a physical way.

　　A graduate from the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology returned to the school for some business. He was surprised about the changes on Haian Lu. “We used to live on Fuxing Island and would pass this dusty road every time we went to school. We would be covered with dust all over on the road. Now with this spray device installed, we have got some water mist on our body and there is little dust,” he said.

　　Cleaners responsible for Haian Lu have been benefited from the new device. They said they would clean the dust descended with the spraying water every one hour.

　　According to related principals of Yangpu District Environmental Protection Bureau, if the pilot program on Haian Lu achieves significant results in dust prevention, they will expand the pilot program to wider areas so as to reduce the dust on urban roads and beautify the traffic environment for the people.
