Big Knowledge & Innovation Zone (the Zone)’s planned building area totals around 1.30 million square meters (sqm), of which 900,000 sqm have been completed, and 380,000 sqm under construction.

　　With the further development of Knowledge & Innovation Community (KIC) as its key, the Zone follows pre-planning, governmental guidance, and market-based operations as its development principles, sources from Yangpu District Science and Technology Innovation Group (YPSTI) told the reporter. Based on the core ideas of developing the district into “national-level innovative district, the core of Shanghai & Technology Innovation Center, and the urban center of a cosmopolis”, the Zone facilitates KIC’s development by fully leveraging the spillover effects of university research institutions’ expertise and technologies. Following the principles of “historical continuity, cultural promotion, improved functions and better environment, it has been actively coordinating efforts of troops and businesses. The Zone has attracted Global 500 innovative companies such as IBM, EMC, AECOM and Splunk, domestic industry-leaders, including China Industrial Design Institute, Luban Software, Dipont Education, New Wisdom Holding, and incubated around 1,600 registered innovative companies, such as Wenba Technology, Zhida Technology, and Agora.io. It has now developed industry clusters for software & information services featuring cloud computing and big data, modern design and creative media.

　　The Zone has been actively developed supporting platforms for innovation and startups, and established international sci-tech platforms such as Bay Area Council, and California-China Office of Trade and Investment (CTO), as well as Tencent Westart Incubator, Bay Area-Yangpu Digitization Park, Shanghai Cloud Computing Innovation Base. It has been facilitating the development of public incubators such as INNOSPACE+ and IPO CLUB. Levering serves providers in the region, such as Yangpu talent center, Shanghai High-level Overseas Talent Base, and University Technology Transfer Center, the Zone has enhanced supports to innovative and entrepreneurial talent and preliminarily developed an innovation and startup landmark featuring international, smart and city-industry integration.

　　For next step, the Zone will further develop its “Startup Axis, Urban Transport Axis and Green Ecological Landscape Axis”. Specifically, the Zone expects to attract more startup cafes, startup platforms and domestic incubators to the Startup Axis, which stretches along the Daxue Road from Fudan University to KIC, by its effective operation services functions. The Urban Transport Axis is expected to evolve into a traffic axis stretching from Songhu Road by connecting underground and over-ground passages. The purpose of the Green Ecological Landscape Axis is to improve residential culture experience and living environment by developing a community axis that integrates culture, entertainment, arts and sports. Leveraging the above axes, the Zone is expected to improve its urban services, create highly-efficient and dimensional spatial connections, deliver nature-city balance, and develop bigger and better inclusive communities to attract innovative elements and services resources such as universities, governments, companies and social organizations. By so doing, startup owners drawn to it could do businesses, strike deals and stay.
