The 1st International Forum on Automotive Lighting (IFAL) was unveiled in Fudan on June 20. Participating experts called on that China needs a national standard for automotive lighting system.
According to Lin Yandan, Associate Professor of Light Source & Lighting Engineering Department of Fudan University and Director of Traffic Lighting & Lighting Signal Committee of China Lighting Society, the automotive lighting market was more than RMB20 billion in 2012 in China, the world’s largest consumer of automobiles. However, the market was mostly dominated by enterprises with foreign investment background. China’s automotive lighting technology has significant gap compared with that of developed countries. The number of core technology with independent property right is quite limited in China while innovative technology is very few as well.
According to Sun Yaojie, Profession in Fudan Electric Light Source Research Institute, Chinese enterprises mostly do slight modification based on foreign designs. The basic standard of the industry is the EU automotive standard rules and regulations. Like Lin said, the road infrastructure of China, physical standards of the Chinese are both different from their European counterparts. China should set up its national standards based on its road situations, characteristics and heights and constitutions of the Chinese people.
